ជាប់គាំងការទូតបន្ទាប់ពីការតវ៉ារបស់ក្រុម Gen Z នៅប្រទេសនេប៉ាល់

The organizer of the Gen Z protest in Nepal was certainly frustrated with an unstable, corrupt, nepotism-centric government, and the social media ban became the last straw on the camel’s back.

Nepal, a small Himalayan republic, sometimes gains international press for extreme events. Recently, Nepal’s flag was spotted in Georgia’s protest, which represents both amusement and idealization among the young protestors on a global scale. On the other hand, it reflected anarchy and hooliganism to the international political establishments.

The organizer of the Gen Z protest in Nepal was certainly frustrated with an unstable, corrupt, nepotism-centric government, and the social media ban became the last straw on the camel’s back.

Many people believed that the social media ban was not really due to non-compliance by US-based companies buta strategy to block the nepo-kid trend that was named and shamed, the family members of high-level political leadership.

There is one crucial piece that was overlooked, which was to stop the former president of Nepal’s effort to regain her party membership and Prime Minister Oli’s agenda to amend the statute to remove the 70-year age limit, clearly a strategy to remain in power within his party.

The social media ban just before the day of his party’s Statute Convention seems suspicious and may have been to stop his party members from posting dissenting opinions that could spiral against his scheme of power grab.

He certainly miscalculated the size of the protest, and later he failed to appease the protest by the end of April 8 by posting condolences to the family of the deceased and taking necessary measures to gain public sympathy.

There is also a growing curiosity about whether this was the complete picture or if this is a pretext for a greater conspiracy and not limited to local actors within Nepal.

On September 3, 2025, Prime Minister KP Oli attended the V-Day parade, an event that had received some controversy in Nepal, and within a week, the prime minister had already resigned, and the major government infrastructure was ablaze due to Gen Z protests.

Beyond the appointment of the new prime minister and the constitutional structure, and a country shaken by the disastrous protest, there was some international support that quickly poured in, which can be perceived as entangled in Nepal’s diplomacy.

While the congratulatory messages from various Western powers were being delivered to Nepal, the congratulatory message from the Dalai Lama created a shock wave in Nepal’s intellectual community, who carefully waited for China to formally recognize and congratulate the new prime minister, and only after China accepted the new government after some days was the situation pacified.

Sushila Karki’s appointment itself was established by negotiation led by Sudan Gurung, who runs an NGO, Hami Nepal, and its website includes ‘Students For Free Tibet’ as one of the brands that support Hami Nepal.

Most recently, there are videos circulating about the black T-shirt with three large letters, TOB. It became viral that the meaning of TOB actually meant Tibetan Original Blood, and a discussion started focusing on who had been provoking all the events and if some actors had anti-Chinese morale while pretending the movement solely emphasized domestic problems in Nepal.

While the newly elected Sushila Karki decided to expand her cabinet, one of the persons selected was Tashi Lanzom, an indigenous member of the Limi community in the bordering area of Nepal and Tibet. She was falsely accused of being a Tibetan refugee, and various allegations against her connection with Free Tibet have further increased suspicion of the conspiracy about what was really happening and who is recommending the ministers for the cabinet.

The suspicion further deepened when the news started to flow about the pattern of the government buildings, which ablaze would require ‘intimate knowledge of the institutions’ and a well-structured organizational prowess. It further questions whether this was an organic political protest or, between the protestors, a possibility of tactful political maneuvering.

Historically, Nepal has had a larger number of communist sympathizers, and when the parties are able to cooperate, they have been able to secure even a two-thirds majority in the parliament. China’s growing ‘Look West Policy’ has naturally grown Chinese influence in Nepal and an effort to revive the old trade route from China to Nepal that can reshape Nepal’s geopolitics.

However, the caretaker government’s agenda to allow Nepalis living abroad to vote would change the traditional voting patterns, and unlike the nature of a normal caretaker government, the interim government has decided to call back 11 ambassadors to Nepal.

The evidence suggests that KP Oli emphasized a power grab and gaining notoriety from one event to another, which made his failure inevitable, but the series of events from the actors involved in the protest, international actors congratulating the interim prime minister, and the interim government’s diplomatic interference simply make the issues even more suspicious, and Nepal is definitely getting more entangled in diplomacy.
