Conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has reignited, entering its third consecutive day despite a July ceasefire brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump. That earlier truce followed five days of heavy clashes that killed at least 48 people.



Current Situation


Thai and Cambodian forces have exchanged artillery fire along the border, leading both governments to evacuate hundreds of thousands of civilians. Casualties continue to rise: Cambodia reports nine civilians killed and 20 seriously injured since Monday; Thailand says four soldiers have been killed and 68 injured.



Positions of Both Sides


Thailand’s foreign minister says conditions are not suitable for negotiations and rejects outside mediation, particularly the use of trade threats. Cambodian officials insist they are willing to talk “at any time,” but accuse Bangkok of targeting civilian areas. Thailand, meanwhile, accuses Cambodia of newly laying landmines which Phnom Penh denies.


Trump’s Intervention Claim


At a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump claimed he had stopped multiple international conflicts in the past and said he would “make a phone call” to end the Thailand–Cambodia fighting. He has engaged leaders of both countries before and used trade leverage in July to force a pause in hostilities.


What’s Driving the Escalation


Tensions rose after Thailand suspended de-escalation measures agreed in an October summit attended by Trump, following a landmine incident. Thai military officials now openly state their goal is to “cripple” Cambodia’s military capabilities.


What’s Next


Despite Trump’s pledge to intervene, the diplomatic opening remains unclear. Thailand resists third-party involvement, while Cambodia signals readiness for talks. Fighting on the border continues with no concrete pathway to a fresh ceasefire yet.
